· Turn off lights and other appliances when not in use. · Lower thermostat settings at night and when the residence is empty. · Heat only occupied rooms and close off empty rooms. · Clean and replace furnace filters regularly. · Open drapes on sunny days in winter, keep them closed in summer. · Keep windows and doors shut tight when they are supposed to be closed. · Dress according to the weather. · Set your hot water heater temperature between 120 and 140 degrees. · Keep refrigerator/freezer coils free from lint and dust build-up. · Don’t allow frost to build up in the freezer compartment beyond ¼” thick. · Repair water leaks on faucets and toilets. One drip per minute can produce water wastage of up to 220 gallons of water per month. · Use one large light bulb instead of several small ones in areas where bright light is needed. · Fill the clothes dryer before using it, but don’t overload it. · Keep the lint screen in the clothes dryer clean. · When you have a choice, use the range-top instead of the oven. · Never boil water in an open pan. Water will come to a boil faster and use less energy in a kettle or covered pan. · Insulate accessible heating ducts in unheated areas.
