·         Turn off lights and other appliances when not in use.

·         Lower thermostat settings at night and when the residence is empty.

·         Heat only occupied rooms and close off empty rooms.

·         Clean and replace furnace filters regularly.

·         Open drapes on sunny days in winter, keep them closed in summer.

·         Keep windows and doors shut tight when they are supposed to be closed.

·         Dress according to the weather.

·         Set your hot water heater temperature between 120 and 140 degrees.

·         Keep refrigerator/freezer coils free from lint and dust build-up.

·         Don’t allow frost to build up in the freezer compartment beyond ¼” thick.

·         Repair water leaks on faucets and toilets.  One drip per minute can produce water wastage of up to 220 gallons of water per month.

·         Use one large light bulb instead of several small ones in areas where bright light is needed.

·         Fill the clothes dryer before using it, but don’t overload it.

·         Keep the lint screen in the clothes dryer clean.

·         When you have a choice, use the range-top instead of the oven.

·         Never boil water in an open pan.  Water will come to a boil faster and use less energy in a kettle or covered pan.

·         Insulate accessible heating ducts in unheated areas.
